How to Know if Your Landscape Sprinkler System Is Leaking

Leak Detection Tips in Your Irrigation System

Underground leaks within your landscape sprinkler system can’t be seen, meaning they are difficult to find. However, above ground, there are obvious signs that something beneath is leaking or is broken, and must be dealt with immediately, before it causes serious damage.

Here are some of the more obvious signs that anyone can spot:

  • A gushing water spout is a symptom that there is a broken spray head or leaks in the irrigation system. A leak in the irrigation line results in a significant change in water pressure, causing the water to shoot into the air.
  • Flooded areas between heads are a sign of a slow and steady leak within the lateral line below the ground surface. Water spurting between the sprinkler heads means that a lateral line below has broken and blown out the soil above.
  • Water trickling out of an irrigation head after the system has turned off may indicate a leaking valve below ground. The diaphragm seal could have worn out and water is leaking freely 24/7. It may also mean the valve is clogged, stopping it from closing fully.
  • Taller grass or grass that is darker than the rest of the lawn may mean a pipe below is cracked and is over-saturating the area.
  • A sprinkler that doesn’t spray as far as it once did, or is spraying dirty water may indicate a ruptured line below that is washing soil into the sprinkler line.
  • Water that has started to dribble over the curb can also be a sign of over-irrigation or bad drainage. It may also mean that you have a broken or damaged irrigation head.
