Steps to Effectively Using Your Sprinkler System

A Lawn and Sprinkler Service Provider Explains

The question of how long should you run your sprinkler system is one that cannot be explained through a couple of sentences. The reason is the wide range of variables that prevent experts, even us, from briefly explaining this matter. However, without sounding like nerds, we, at Family Sprinkler and Landscaping, can tell you how to effectively run your sprinkler system. Here, our lawn and sprinkler service providers have compiled a few things you should consider for the effective use of your lawn sprinkler system. Keep reading if you are interested.

Step One: Calibrate Your Sprinkler

To do this, you need to find out how much water your sprinklers deliver over a certain period of time.

Step Two: Water Deeply

You can use a rain/soak/rain pattern to water deeply. Watering more than 25” in an hour is not something you want because such amounts are impossible for the soil to absorb. What you want is a 5” every time you water your lawn. This will wet the soil profile the complete 8” deep. When pulling a hose, just water until you reach 5” and then reposition your sprinkler. If you have an automatic system, you can easily set up two start times in the early morning.

Step Three: Water Infrequently

Once you have calibrated the sprinklers, you can set your schedule. Now you are well-aware that you should water up to 5” on a daily basis, and that your lawn requires 1-2 inches of water between irrigation and rain. Given these factors, we can adjust the sprinklers to work in the beginning and before the end of the workweek, for example, on Monday and Thursday. If the weather is hot and starts to stress your lawn, you can re-schedule to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, making sure it is set to deliver 1,5” of water. If it gets even hotter, you can move to water your lawn every day by scheduling your sprinklers to deliver 2” of water.

Note: This is without including rainfall. Feel free to purchase a rain sensor or gauge to know exactly how much Mother Nature has helped you and your lawn.

As you can see, there are several variables that you should consider when you want to use your sprinkler system effectively.
